How to make a round pillow form from a standard pillow

Apparently buying pillows on sale for $9.99 is not the best idea because in three months time they become flat as pancakes. Although not so great for my neck, they provide a great opportunity for repurposing and crafting. Because really, that’s what’s important here, right?

I’ve wanted to create some new throw pillows for my couch for a while now as they seem to be an inexpensive and easy way to update the look of a room. I was inspired by The DIY Mommy’s spring-time throw pillow with a lovely bird print. This idea to upcycle a tea towel into a throw pillow cover is also fun: I received a beautiful tea towel as a gift from a friend a while back. It’s too nice to use but would make a lovely throw pillow cover! And how creative is this repurposing of curtains into pillow covers?

Receiving the beautiful pure wool yarn from Topsy Farms in a gorgeous teal color provided the perfect excuse. You can learn more about the benefits of using wool in our recent post.

I was so excited to complete the pattern for our crochet sand-dollar throw pillow but I just didn’t have the round pillow form insert for it. Although I could buy it off of Amazon*, I thought it would be better to try and use up and bring life back to some of my old flattened pillows rather than just throwing them away.

1. Wash the pillow as per instructions to make sure the stuffing and the casing are clean.

2. Cut open one end of the pillow and remove the stuffing

3. On a large piece of paper cut a circle approximately one inch wider across than your desired pillow size. For example if you are making a 18 inch pillow for you want to cut the paper to make a 19 inch diameter circle.

4. Use the paper circle as a template to cut the pillowcase thing to the right size.

5. With the sewing machine stitch around the circle with a half inch edge leaving approximately 4 inches un-stitched to let you stuff the pillow. Turn your new pillow inside out.

6. Break apart the flattened pillow stuffing to fluff it up and stuff the pillow form.

7. Once stuffed to your desired thickness we used approximately three quarters of the original pillows stuffing stitch the pillow opening closed with the sewing machine. You may want to stuff a little fuller than your desired pillow thickness because it will likely flatten with use.
