“It was super fun and kind of like a girls craft retreat”.
We love how one of the participants described her experience with our first live Simple Daily DIY creativity challenge. Over 15 days (June 1-15), participants were encouraged to create a simple craft or DIY in just 10 minutes a day! Every three days the material we were working with changed and participants either created something on their own or tried one of the demonstration projects we had outlined in a detailed project kit (see a sample here) and with a quick video.
The five materials we created with for the challenge included:
- Mason Jars
- floral stems
It was so motivating to see the projects shared by the participants in the Simple Daily DIY Facebook group as well as on Instagram using the #SimpleDailyDIY tag. Take a few moments and check out some of the beautiful creations shared. When available, we’ve linked each image to the blog post where some of our blogging participants shared how they created the project.
On our blog, we recently shared our upcycled driftwood glass votive candle holder we made for the branches and twigs challenge and our simple wrapped-rope coasters and placemats we made for the rope challenge. These two projects were part of the final summer backyard table setting we created through the 15 day challenge.
If you missed the challenge but are interested in making the versatile projects for this tablescape, you have to check out our new online course. Through this self-paced course we provide a detailed project plan, step-by-step instructions including videos and encouragement along the way to create an inviting tablescape to wow your summer party guests!
What Worked Well in the Challenge
We are still collecting feedback from the challenge participants but from first responses and our own reflections it seems as though the following worked well in the first Simple Daily DIY challenge:
- A variety of project materials to work with;
- Encouragement and feedback between participants in the Simple Daily DIY Facebook Group;
- Cross-sharing of people’s creations on our Instagram account, in the Facebook group and through the email list for the challenge.
What We’d Like to do Better for the Next Challenge
Although there was quite a bit of sharing and support in the Facebook group we’d love to have more of the members engage and participate (of about 110 members in the group there were about 20 regular respondents). We’d love for you to leave any comments below on how we might encourage more member participation.
The 15-day challenge seemed to fly and starting a new project every 3 days felt quite fast. Especially when the 3-day period fell on weekdays, there seemed to be less participation and engagement. While our goal was to try and set the 10 minutes a day aside to create, it may be more realistic to do one project every 5 days, or once a week.
What’s Next for the Simple Daily DIY Challenge?
With all the excitement and engagement within the group and on Instagram we actually went into a bit of DIY withdrawal once the challenge was over! So, to continue the party, we are planning to launch the next, new and improved challenge in mid-August. In the meantime, we’ll be getting to know each other better in the Facebook group, sharing simple DIY ideas, and hosting several mini-challenges (you can see a recap of the first one we did here) over the coming weeks.
In addition, we’ve released our Simple DIY Ideas: 30 Minutes or Less Pinterest Board which you may be interested in checking out and following.
“It was a blast. I really enjoyed seeing what others were doing and learning to look at things in different ways. Sometimes I get stuck with my own style of crafts. There are just so many great ideas out there. Seeing what others do helps to inspire my own creativity again.” – Charlotte H.
