A Simple DIY Console Table Makeover: A Solution to Yellowing Furniture

We’ve had this console table in the family for a number of years. And actually, we can’t even remember where we bought it or for what purpose! Over the years, it has been moved around numerous times and has found it’s way to the family cottage as additional counter space for the small kitchen. Although we also can’t remember what colour it was when it was first purchased, it is now an all white-“ish” colour. Over time, the piece has turned yellow making it look old, neglected and dirty.

Since the table itself is very practical and solid, we figured it was time to give it a well deserved facelift.

*DecoArt provided the paint we selected for this project free of charge. No additional compensation was received for this project.

We decided to use Decoart Americana Decor Satin Enamel paint products for this project. These paints work especially well in high-use areas, such as kitchens, because of their durable finish. They have a great selection of colours to choose from. We loved this Seaside Blue right away when we saw it: it’s fresh, and light and cheerful!

In order to prevent the yellow from seeping throw the new paint, as well as to minimize further yellowing so we used the Americana Decor Stain Blocker prior to painting. The stain blocker, which dries clear, prevents stains, knotty wood, and tannins from resurfacing and discoloring finished pieces. We are so happy to have this product (a little goes a long way!) and has very quickly become a must-have for many of our furniture upcycling projects!

Instructions for upcycling this console table:

1. Place newspaper or a dropcloth under the table to catch any drips of paint. Wipe down all surfaces with a cloth and warm soapy water to remove any dirt.

2. Apply one coat of stain blocker with a paint brush to all surfaces. Leave for 5-7 days.

3. Shake the satin enamels paint well between each coat. Paint the table top surface with Satin Enamel in seaside blue colour. Let dry fully and then apply a second coat if needed (ours did not).

4. Paint the table legs with Satin Enamel in pure white colour. Let dry fully and then apply a second coat if needed (ours did not). Let dry completely.

We’d loved how the revamped table looked so much that it inspired us to create a little office nook in one of the bedrooms at our parents house. Now we’ll have a much-needed dedicate office space to work when we visit them.

Did you have to sand the table first?
