Dollar Store Valentine’s Day XO Sign

Using inexpensive supplies from the Dollar Store, I put together this sweet craft for Valentine’s Day; a little hugs and kisses sign using wooden letters and surfaces.

Valentine’s Day Craft Idea

Sometimes crafting calls for a little trip to my local dollar store to find inspiration and budget-friendly craft supplies. Crafting as much as I do, I definitely have a sufficient stash of supplies but it’s always fun to browse the shops for more! I’m often excited to see what sort of items they have in the craft aisle and especially around the various holidays throughout the year.

I was able to find all of the wood surfaces to make this latest craft, everything from the plaque to the wooden letters and even the mini banner cutouts. And since decorative moss is something I like to use in many crafts, such as these painted pinecone succulent craft and wood craft pumpkin patch craft, I tend to grab a pack of it when it’s on sale.

How to Make a Dollar Store Valentine’s Day XO Sign

We were inspired to make this craft as part of a series of Facebook Live videos all about decorating for Valentine’s day. You can check out the video for this XO wood sign here.

Preparing the Wood Surfaces

Paint the wood plaque and the XO letters white and leave them to dry.

Painting a wooden plaque white.

Hot glue the moss to the inside of the plaque. Be careful not to burn fingers! Add as much moss as you like to get desired coverage.

Hot gluing purple moss into the painted wood plaque.

Paint some mod podge on the XO letters and add diamond dust over top for sparkle and texture.

Pouring diamond dust over XO letters.

Hot glue the letters to the inside of the plaque on top of the moss.

Adding hot glue to the back of a wood letter.

Making a Mini Banner

Paint the little wooden banner cut outs pink and dip the bottom of them in gold paint. Thread them through a string and then glue the ends of the string to the sides of the plaque so the banner hangs over the XO letters.

Painting small wooden banners pink.

And lastly, add a saying to the banner cut outs using a paint pen, such as “be mine”.

What I love most about this craft is the mix of textures, everything from glitter, to shiny smooth and messy moss. There is mo much to look at and enjoy with this simple Valentine’s Day craft.
