A Family Tree Craft with Cricut Foil Transfer

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Cricut. All opinions are 100% mine.

Hi friends! Today we’re showing you how to make a beautiful and personalized piece of framed art with this family tree craft using the new Cricut Foil Transfer Kit.

Personalized Family Tree Framed Art

A few weeks ago we shared our first impressions on using Cricut’s new Foil Transfer System and since then we’ve enjoyed the ease of crafting with foil.

Since the Cricut Foil Transfer tool is activated with pressure instead of heat, it takes the pressure off of crafting while still creating long-lasting foil effects.

Adding the foil detail really gives the project an extra something special, creating a bit of shine and a rich quality to every creation!

You can easily personalize the lettering to suit your family tree following the tutorial below.

Seeing how nice the piece turned out, we’d love to make one for our parents as well. And to top it off, we made this simple yet gleaming gift tag using gold foil to attach to the gift. Check out the tutorial below.

Materials Needed:

Making a Family Tree Craft using Cricut Foil Transfer:

Preparing the Images:

Open Cricut Design Space and click on the “+” sign to start a new project, opening up a blank canvas. Click on the “Template” button from the toolbar and search #M127428AA design.

Insert the image onto your canvas to begin. Adjust the size of the tree to 8.5” high (adjusting the width accordingly to scale) by highlighting the image and clicking on the size box in the top toolbar.

Next, open the linetype drop down menu and change the linetype to FOIL with the tip set to BOLD. Change the foil color to gold.

To personalize the family tree, add your family member’s initials inside the individual leaves. Click on the text button and type out one set of initials. Change the font to Angel Kisses and adjust the letter spacing to 1.2. Next, change the linetype to FOIL with the tip set to MEDIUM and change the foil color to silver. Reduce the size of the font to fit inside the leaves.

Duplicate and add as many family member’s initials as desired and place each of the initials inside the leaves. Highlight the entire image and click on “Attach” to hold the individual pieces together.

Add the phrase “Our Family” in a similar way, except change the font to regular Pen & Ink. Select “ungroup letters” and then shift each individual letter right up next to the prior one.

Continue until all letters are connected and then highlight the text and select “Attach” to join the letters. Refer to our post on help with letter spacing in Design Space for more details if needed.

Adjust the size of the phrase to 2.25” wide and place it next to the tree trunk. Highlight the entire image and select “Attach” to proceed.

Applying the Cricut Foil

Select “Make It” in the upper right corner to proceed with cutting. Position the image in the center of the mat if using a 12”x12” piece of cardstock.

Choose the Cardstock from the list of options in the drop down menu.

Be sure to move the pressure wheels off to the side as they will cause the foil to transfer on to the paper since this transfer foil works with pressure.

The next part is easy: just follow the prompts in Design Space to complete your foil transfer.

Place a sheet of silver foil over top of black cardstock (SHINY side up) and tape along ALL the edges to hold the foil in place. You can trim the foil down to the size you need but make sure to leave enough extra space around the actual image since the tape does peel off some of the cardstock.

Insert the fine housing tip as prompted and proceed.

Once down, DO NOT UNLOAD, simply remove the silver foil, put it aside to use for other projects if possible.

Place a sheet of gold foil over the cardstock in the same way and proceed with applying the gold.

Now for the fun part: getting to reveal the glimmer and gleam! When fully complete, unload the mat and simply peel off the foil to see the beautiful gold and silver effect.

Cut down the cardstock to fit your family tree craft inside your picture frame. Style and enjoy!

Making a Gift Tag using Cricut Foil Transfer:

Preparing the Image

Click on the “Template” button from the toolbar and search #MFC98A design. Insert the image onto your canvas to begin.

With the gift tag selected, click on “Ungroup” to separate the images. Click on the swirly line design and change the linetype to FOIL with the tip set to BOLD. Change the foil color to gold.

Change the material color to black or whatever color of cardstock you have and then proceed with applying the foil and cutting out the tag.

Applying the Foil and Cutting

Select “Make It” in the upper right corner to proceed and position the image in the top right corner of the mat if using a 12”x12” piece of cardstock. Choose the Cardstock from the list of options in the drop down menu. Remember to move the pressure wheels off to the side.

Following the prompts on the screen, place a sheet of gold foil over top of black cardstock in the area of the gift tag and tape along ALL the edges to hold the foil in place.

Insert the BOLD housing tip and press continue to apply the foil on to the paper.

When done, DO NOT UNLOAD THE MAT, simply remove the foil and then switch to the fine point blade to cut out the gift tag.

Remove the gift tag from the mat when done and tie a piece of ribbon through the hole at the top.
