Whenever we have a chance to head to our family cottage we take it! One of our favorite things to do on the beach is collect rocks, driftwood and seaglass. Rocks especially make wonderful little canvases for all kinds of projects. For example, we’ve painted shamrocks, shark rocks, watercolor painted pumpkin rocks and a bunch of Christmas-themed rocks to name just a few. Moreover, we’ve even used rocks to make earthy fridge magnets and minimalist wall art.
When we unboxed our Cricut Maker a couple of weeks ago we wanted to try our hand at a quick and simple project the first go around. Sonja had a little basket of beach stones nearby which were just begging to be glammed up. So we took to Cricut Design Space for some inspiration.
Materials Needed:
- Cricut Maker
- Snowflake Christmas Card template in Cricut Design Space
- Adhesive Vinyl in black glitter
- Light grip mat
- 2.5-3” wide beach stones (we have them available in our Etsy shop)
- Scissors
- Tweezers such as those in the Cricut Weeding Tool Set
How to make simple glittering snowflake and monogrammed rocks:
After browsing through the project ideas in Cricut Design Space, we came across this snowflake design with monogram letters and thought that it was the perfect shape and style for the rocks we had on hand. Although we still needed to scale down the size, it took no time at all to reconfigure the design to suit our vision. Next, we simply changed up the initials that were in there to match those of all our kids.
We were drawn to the black glitter vinyl thinking the contrast would look great against the natural gray stone.
We loaded the vinyl on to the light grip mat and followed the step by step instructions in the program.
The cut lines are not easy to see but as soon as we started to pull up a corner of the vinyl, the design started to reveal itself. To help with the weeding, we cut out the surrounding section of the vinyl and just worked with that small area, putting the remaining glitter vinyl aside for a future project.
The intricate and delicate design turned out so beautifully. The kids came along and helped to add the little dots in random places.
As soon as the letters went onto the stones we both thought that they would make perfect napkin weights for an elegant dinner reception or as decor for a winter party. Wouldn’t they look great for a New Year’s Eve party or even for a winter-themed wedding shower? You could use different colours of glitter vinyl to suit your special occasion.
