Cherry Blossom Mug Painting

Capture the beauty of blooming cherry blossoms at Spring time with this simple hand painted mug design.

Soft and Pretty Floral Painted Mugs

Inspired by beautiful cherry blossoms, these painted mugs are a sweet addition to your mug collection or better yet, are a sweet handmade gift giving idea. Having always wanted to try mug painting, I am more than pleased with how these painted cherry blossom mugs turned out!

When our family is lucky enough to all be together, we love to share a pot of coffee before we start our day (our very own family “traditizia”). We’ve found that we each have our own style of mug that we insist on using. I can’t wait to once again enjoy a cup of coffee (or tea) with my family and friends and these mugs will be a great way to celebrate.

A Few Tips to Get you Started:

  • Thoroughly wash and dry the ceramic mugs with hot soapy water before painting.
  • Let the paint dry fully between layers: before adding a second coat or changing colors.
  • Protect your working surface with newspaper or other disposable material.
  • Wash your paint brushes between colors and coats to keep the paint colors from mixing together.

How to Paint Mugs:

Paint the tea cup handle in Soft Jade.

Mug handle painted green.

Using a fine tip angled brush and starting at the bottom of the handle, apply a thin upward diagonal line across one side of the cup in Black Tie. Keep your stroke even, quick and smooth.

Adding a diagonal line with black paint on a white mug.

Next, apply shorter diagonal lines off the main line as shown. Taper the lines towards the ends, the area furthest from the main line.

Continue along the entire length of the main line until your lines resemble tree branches.

For any areas requiring touch ups, simply dip the end of a cotton swab in hot water and remove any imperfections along the branches.

Repeat these steps on the other side of the mug working from the handle outward.

Holding the white mug to show the black painted diagonal lines facing each other.

Dip the back end of a fine tip paint brush in Cadillac Pink. Gently dab the paintbrush at the end of the main line creating a small dot.

Continue to dip and dab the paintbrush end creating 4 more dots in a circular shape.

Five dabs of pink paint put in a circular shape.

The 5 dots will resemble the flower petals. If needed, fill in the center of the flower with more Pink Cadillac.

Dabbing the inside of the pink circular shape with more pink paint.

Repeat at the end of all lines or just before the tips. Add some single dots throughout as well.

Dabbing pink paint all over the black painted tree branch to resemble cherry blossom flowers.

Mix equal parts Cotton Ball white with Cadillac Pink and apply the mixture to some of the flower petal tips using a fine tip angled paint brush.

Adding white paint to the pink painted cherry blossom flowers.

Dip the back end of a fine tip paint brush in Raspberry.

Dabbing the back of a paintbrush with dark pink paint.

Gently dab the centers of each flower.

For Dishwasher Safe Painted Mugs

For a top-rack, dishwasher-safe finish place finished piece in cool oven, set temperature to 325°F, bake for 30 minutes, then cool with oven door partially open. Cleans up with soap and water.
