How to Make a Silent Coastal Wind Chime

Cut x3 strands of twine approx. 24” long.

Mark x3 evenly spaced holes along the longest piece of driftwood. Drill holes through.

Embellishing theWIND CHIME with Paint and decoupage

For some added interest, you can choose to add color to the windchime using paint and/or decoupage tecniques!

  • Simply dry brush the paint over top of the smaller driftwood pieces and leave them to dry.
  • Apply a coat of mod podge over the seashells. Separate the napkin plies to just one layer. Press the printed layer onto the coated seashell and press in place.

Assembling the DIY Noiseless Wind Chime

Once the decoupage and paint dries, drill holes through the center of the driftwood pieces and seashells.

Working one strand at a time, knot the bottom end of the strand and then thread the other end through a series of driftwood, seashells and wood beads.

Place the wood beads between the seashells to prevent hard shell-on-shell contact, ensuring it stays completely silent even on windy days. And additionally, tie a knot in the twine underneath each seashell to hold in place and prevent them from hanging over the embellishments below.

Continue until the strand measures 20” long and secure the top embellishment with a single knot. Put aside. Repeat with the other two strands.

To complete, thread the loose hanging ends through the pre-drilled holes in the large driftwood piece and tie a knot above the hole.

Choose Quiet Materials

The secret to making a silent wind chime for an apartment balcony is avoiding hard pieces that repeatedly knock together. For other options, try lightweight wooden beads, feathers, knotted cotton cord, fabric strips and raffia.

If you want to incorporate shells or sea glass-style beads, leave enough space between each strand so they can move independently without constantly touching.

Try Different Coastal Styles

For a classic beach-house look, combine pale driftwood with white cotton cord, shells, and natural wooden beads. For something more contemporary, use a simple piece of smooth wood with strands in white, sandy beige, muted aqua, and soft blue.

Adjust the Size for Your Space

A compact version works well beside a window, in a reading nook, or on a small balcony. If you have more room, use a longer piece of driftwood and create several hanging strands of different lengths.

Before attaching everything permanently, lay the pieces on a table and experiment with the arrangement. A staggered shape often creates more natural-looking movement.

Stop the Pieces From Tangling

If your strands keep twisting together, increase the distance between their attachment points. Using slightly heavier wooden beads near the bottom can also help individual strands hang straight.

How to Style Your Finished Quiet Wind Chime

Hang your silent coastal wind chime near a bright window where gentle air movement can make the strands sway. Pair it with linen curtains, woven baskets, pale timber, and a few houseplants for an understated coastal home décor idea that works even when you live far from the sea.

On an apartment balcony, hang it alongside container plants or a small seating area. Natural textures such as jute, terracotta, weathered wood, and cotton can help create a relaxed seaside atmosphere without filling the space with obvious nautical decorations.

Silent Coastal Wind Chime

A DIY silent coastal wind chime is proof that apartment-friendly décor doesn’t have to feel restrictive. With a few simple materials, you can enjoy the movement and character of a traditional wind chime without creating unwanted noise for your neighbours.

Personalise yours with colours and textures that remind you of the coast, then find a breezy spot where it can gently move.
