How to Make a Unique DIY Faux Fiddle Leaf Fig with Masking Tape

I shared the tutorial for how to make this pretty fiddle leaf fig on a Facebook live which you can catch here. Or if you prefer the photo tutorial, continue reading below.

Preparing the Materials

Cut several pieces of floral wire to 5-6″ long. Lay a piece of masking tape over top of one wire (covering about 1/2 of the wire) and wrap the masking tape over the top and press it together with the tape on the reverse side (sticky sides pressed together).

Trim off the corners making them all rounded and cut in a wavy shape to form a leaf shape.

Repeat these steps for more leaves. You can make wider leaves by adding two pieces of masking tape.

Painting the Masking Tape Leaves

Next, mix the green acrylic paint with a drop of black paint to create a rich dark green.

Paint both sides of the masking tape leaves with this dark green color. You will need 2 coats of paint. Let dry between coats. You can use a heat gun to speed up the drying time.

Now you want to add vein details to the middle and outer edges of the masking tape with a fine paintbrush. Mix the lighter green and yellow acrylic paint color to create the veins.

adding duraclear to leaves

Once the paint is dry, you want to cover each leaf with DuraClear to give it a nice finish and make it easy to clean.

Assembling the Mini Plants

The next step is to cover the wire stems. Paint a piece of masking tape with brown acrylic paint to cover the stem of the plant. One coat should be plenty. Let dry.

Cut the masking tape in half and wrap each piece around the floral wire stem. Make sure the darker green color is facing up.

Continue to add each leaf and wrap the brown painted masking tape around the stems so it forms one branch.

Add a piece of floral foam into a clay pot and insert the wire ends into it. You can paint the pot or leave it natural.

Then fill the top of the clay pot with pebbles to complete the craft.

And there you have it! A lovely faux fiddle leaf fig that you can proudly display on your desk, in the kitchen, or anywhere in your home where you want to add a bit of life and color.
