If you want to know how to decorate a plain garland, this is the place to do it- and on a budget! Avoid the extravagantly priced garland when you can easily make this yourself for a fraction of the cost.
How to decorate a plain garland easily
This is a fun, simple craft that will hopefully inspire you to create something for the holidays. If you are new to crafting, this is a great place to start. If you’ve been crafting for a while, then this will be a fun craft without having to put in too much mental effort!
I love adding greenery to our winter decor. If you go to any store to buy pre-decorated garlands, they are so expensive! Some that we saw were as high as $80- one even $125! We bought the garland for only $4 (Canadian dolars, that is!). The best part about this is that you can add as little or as much as you want to your garland. You can make it match other decorations, or match your house!

How to Decorate a Plain Garland for Christmas
I shared the tutorial for this garland on a recent Facebook Live which you can catch here. All of the step-by-step instructions can be found in the video but I’ll include them here below as well.
Start by laying both of the garlands on a flat surface. You will need some space for this craft!
Using the floral wire, tie the two garlands together.
Next, wrap the Christmas lights in the garland and secure it with floral wire.
Cut some faux berries and work them into the garland and secure them with floral wire.
Also use the floral wire to attach the other embellishments, like the wooden house cut outs and pinecones. You can use a mix of natural and painted pinecones if you like.
Take the ribbon and create a few bows and using the floral wire, attach them throughout the garland.
Once done, the budget-friendly Christmas garlan is ready for hanging. Add it to your mantle and have fun decorating! We also have posts on how to make a pinecone wreath (without glue or wire) and the upcycled deer decoration (coming soon!). The eco-friendly organic cotton and hemp stockings you see hanging on the mantle are made by us and sold from our SMCH Stitched Etsy shop here.
We would love to see as many examples as possible of how your budget-friendly garland turned out. Now that you know how to decorate a plain garland, we would love to see it! Tag us on Facebook or Instagram– we can’t wait to see it!
