Dyeing Sola Wood Flowers

When you order flowers specifically from Sola, there is an option to order them “raw” (or ready for you to dye) or you can get them already with colour. We thought it would be a lot more fun to create our own colour palette and then see how diferent dyeing methods affect the end result.

The kit you see below is from our monthly subscription craft box, but you can also find sola wood flowers here. These flowers are so versatile that we thought they would be perfect for doing any type of holiday or seasonal crafting. Depending on the colour palette you choose, you get extremely different effects, which makes playing with the different dyes a lot of fun.

How to Dye Sola Wood Flowers

There are 3 ways to dye Sola Wood flowers:

  • Dyeing with latex paint
  • Dyeing with acrylic paint or
  • Brushing on with acrylic paint

We have a video showing how to dye Sola Wood flowers on our facebook page which you can watch here. Additionally, we have a step by step instructions you can follow below.

Fill a small bowl with ½ cup warm water and add the dye (either the latex paint or acrylic paint) in whatever color of choosing. The more paint you add, the darker the final flower color will be.

Add a few drops of softener into the mixture and stir all together.

Repeat these steps with the other paint colors.

If desired, store the dye mixture in a small, sealed mason jar for future use. Shake well before using again.

Alternatively, the paint can be brushed directly on to the wood flower. I love this technique for adding additional colors to the edges of the flower petals.
