Let’s face it- it’s the 2020s, and we are really phasing out of magazines.

I wish it wasn’t the case, but the days of having tons of newspapers and magazines in our homes are no longer a thing as the world grows more digital. I feel like in the 90s tons of us had magazine holders we used all the time. And now some of us may still have it in the back of our closet with no idea what to do with it.

How to Update a Magazine Holder

Start by painting your magazine holder with white chalky paint.

Using a wet fine tip paint brush ‘paint’ the edges of the rice paper and carefully remove the design.

Using a wet paintbrush to remove excess paper.

Apply a layer of decoupage or mod podge over the magazine holder.

Applying glue over top of the painted magazine holder.

Place the rice paper on top of the glue and gently press down with your fingers.

Gluing decorative rice paper onto the magazine holder.

Place a piece of parchment paper over top of the glued rice paper and take your heated iron and gently rub back and forth.

Gently sand the edges to remove excess paper.

Materials
  

  • Magazine holder we got ours from the thrift store
  • Decorative rice paper decoupage paper or napkins
  • White chalky paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Decoupage glue
  • Sand paper
  • Mini heat press
  • Parchment paper

Instructions
 

  • Start by painting your magazine holder with white chalky paint.
  • Using a wet fine tip paint brush ‘paint’ the edges of the rice paper and carefully remove the design.
  • Apply a layer of decoupage or mod podge over the magazine holder.
  • Place the rice paper on top of the glue and gently press down with your fingers.
  • Place a piece of parchment paper over top of the glued rice paper and take your heated iron and gently rub back and forth.
  • Gently sand the edges to remove excess paper.
  • Add greenery or flowers to turn your magazine into a beautiful centerpiece.
