Bookmarks for Kids: Colorful Monster Paperclips

I’m a fan of any craft that encourages kids to read, especially after 3 months of distance learning with our kiddos! These DIY silly monster bookmarks for kids will make reading more enjoyable for all school-aged kids.

Making Bookmarks for Kids

Last year we shared these Valentine’s Day coloring bookmarks as a non-sweets gift giving craft idea for our kid’s classmates. I think most parents would appreciate the sentiment!

Materials Needed to make Monster Paperclips:

Tips to Get You Started

  • Let paint dry fully between coats and when changing colors.
  • Protect your work surface with newspaper or piece of parchment paper.
  • Paint all sides of wood circles in the base color.
  • When glueing, hold googly eyes and paper clips in place for at least 10 seconds then put aside to dry fully.

How to Make Colorful Monster Paperclips:

Monster 1:

Paint base of wood circle in Cobalt Blue Hue and then paint a monster face in Yellow Green Light as shown. Using a very fine tip brush, paint the zigzag mouth and stitches in Quinacridone Magenta.

Using a white craft glue, attach two googly eyes to off center from painted circle.

Monster 2:

Paint base of wood circle in Cobalt Blue Hue. Using a fine tip brush, paint 3 small dots on both sides Hansa Yellow Light as shown and paint the triangular shaped mouth in Quinacridone Magenta.

Using a white craft glue, attach two googly eyes to center of painted circle.

Monster 3:

Paint base of wood circle in Cobalt Blue Hue and then paint a monster face in Quinacridone Magenta as shown. Next, paint an oval shape in Yellow Green Light and another smaller one in Hansa Yellow Light.

Add some different sized googly eyes as shown.

Monster 4:

Paint base of wood circle in Hansa Yellow Light. Using a fine tip brush, paint a small dot for the mouth in Yellow Green Light.

Using a white craft glue, attach large googly eye to center of painted circle.

Monster 5:

Paint base of wood circle in Yellow Green Light. Next, paint criss-crossing stripes in Hansa Yellow Light as shown and then paint a thin zig zagging line for the mouth in Cobalt Blue.

Glue a single googly eye in the center.

Monster 6:

Paint base of wood circle in Hansa Yellow Light. Next, paint a face in Quinacridone Magenta and then paint a thin zig zagging line in Yellow Green Light.

Glue two googly eyes to the face.

Monster 7:

Paint base of wood circle in Quinacridone Magenta. Next, paint a mouth shape in Cobalt Blue and then paint stitches in Hansa Yellow Light.

Glue two different sized googly eyes to the face.

Attach paperclip to back side of monster face. Put aside to dry.

Materials
  

  • Decoart Americana Premium Acrylics in Quinacridone Magenta, Cobalt Blue Hue, Yellow Green Light, Hansa Yellow Light
  • Assorted and fine tip paint brushes
  • Wood Turning Shapes Circles 1” x ⅛”
  • Craft Glue-On Googly Eyes in assorted sizes
  • White Craft Glue
  • Large Paper Clips

Instructions
 

Monster 1:

  • Paint base of wood circle in Cobalt Blue Hue.
  • Paint monster face in Yellow Green Light.
  • Using a very fine tip brush, paint the zigzag mouth and stitches in Quinacridone Magenta.
  • Using a white craft glue, attach two googly eyes to off center from painted circle.
  • Attach paper clip to back side of monster face. Put aside to dry.

Monster 2:

  • Paint base of wood circle in Cobalt Blue Hue.
  • Using a fine tip brush, paint 3 small dots on both sides Hansa Yellow Light.
  • Using a fine tip brush, paint the triangular shaped mouth in Quinacridone Magenta.
  • Using a white craft glue, attach two googly eyes to center of painted circle.
  • Attach paper clip to back side of monster face. Put aside to dry.

Monster 4:

  • Paint base of wood circle in Hansa Yellow Light.
  • Using a fine tip brush, paint a small dot for the mouth in Yellow Green Light.
  • Using a white craft glue, attach large googly eye to center of painted circle.
  • Attach paper clip to back side of monster face. Put aside to dry.
