I started making them after realising how expensive ready-made hanging decorations can be, especially in larger sizes. A few sheets of paper later, I had something that looked far more impressive than anything shop-bought.

How to Make Paper Stars

Making the Star Points

Cut a paper bag into 6 even sized square pieces. All squares should be the same size for an even star. You can make them any size you’d like but ours are 4 inches by 4 inches.

Taking one of the square pieces of paper, fold it in half to make a triangle.

Folding edges of paper.

Take the top triangle and fold it over. You’ll now have a triangle shape.

Next, at the base of the triangle fold the two points inwards towards the middle.

Use hot glue to hold in place. But make sure not to glue down the initial fold.

Unfold the initial fold. Repeat the steps with the rest of the paper.

Assembling the Paper Star

Start by laying the star point flat and adding hot glue to the corner.

Glue the next start point on top and continue gluing one at a time.

Once all the star points have been glued together, gently open and hot glue the two ends to make a star shape.

Tips, Variations & Troubleshooting

Making large paper stars is straightforward, but a few small adjustments can make a big difference to the final result.

Paper choices and size options

For crisp, structured stars, medium-weight paper works best. Standard printer paper is fine for practice, but for display pieces, try scrapbook paper, kraft paper, or lightweight card.

If you want truly oversized paper stars, tape two sheets together along the short edge before folding. This creates a longer strip and results in a larger star with more dramatic points.

Colour makes a huge impact. White paper gives a clean, Scandinavian feel, while metallic or patterned paper feels festive. For kids’ rooms or parties, bright colours or even painted paper can work well.

Folding and shaping tips

Sharp folds are the secret to good-looking paper stars. Use a ruler or the edge of a table to press folds flat as you go. If your star looks uneven at the end, gently adjust each point by pinching and reshaping. Paper is forgiving, so take your time here.

If the centre of your star keeps popping open, a tiny piece of double-sided tape hidden inside one fold will hold it neatly without being visible.

Common problems and quick fixes

  • Star looks lopsided: Check that your paper strip was even before folding. Uneven edges throw everything off.
  • Points aren’t sharp: Reinforce the final folds by running your fingernail along the crease.
  • Paper tearing: Switch to slightly thicker paper or reduce how tightly you pull when shaping the points.

These small tweaks help your large paper stars look polished rather than homemade in a rushed way.

How to Display / Style Your Project

Large paper stars really shine when they’re given space. One of my favourite home décor ideas is hanging a single oversized star in a window using clear thread. It catches the light beautifully and works year-round, not just at Christmas.

For a statement wall, group three stars in different sizes and keep the colours within the same palette. This works well above a sofa, bed, or mantel and feels intentional rather than cluttered.

New Favourite Way To Decorate

Large paper stars are one of those projects that look far more complicated than they actually are. Once you’ve made one, the process clicks, and it’s hard not to keep going.

A small stack of paper can turn into décor that feels personal, bold, and surprisingly versatile. Whether you’re decorating your own space or creating something handmade for someone else, these stars are always worth the few minutes they take to make.
