Scrap Wood Snowman Craft
There’s something cosy and nostalgic about snowmen, especially when they don’t melt and you don’t have to freeze your fingers building them. That’s where snowman crafts come in—leaving you with a rustic, handmade decoration that brings cheer indoors or out.

If you’ve got a pile of leftover wood from past projects (think fence posts, pallet boards, old furniture bits, driftwood), this is the perfect way to put them to good use. No two snowmen are the same, and that’s part of the fun. Each one ends up with its own personality, whether it’s a tilted top hat, a wonky grin, or a scarf made from fabric scraps.
Why You’ll Love Making A Snowman Craft
They’re rustic. They’re adorable. And they’re made almost entirely from things you already have in the garage or shed. You can cut them into different sizes for a whole snowman family, leave the edges rough for a farmhouse feel, or sand and paint for a cleaner look.
Painting is where the magic happens—whether you go for classic white with coal-black eyes and a carrot-orange nose, or lean into whimsy with polka dots, buffalo check scarves, and glittery accents. You can hot glue on buttons, screw in tiny branches for arms, or even use scrap fabric and twine to accessorise. Every snowman ends up with its own character, and that’s half the fun.
Creative Ways to Use Your Scrap Wood Snowmen
These aren’t just shelf-sitters. Depending on the size and design, you can use your wood snowmen all over the house—or even outside. Here are a few ideas:
- Front porch décor: Make a tall one to stand beside the door with a hand-painted “Let it Snow” sign.
- Mantel display: Group a few together in varying heights for a cosy winter scene.
- Tree ornaments: Cut smaller ones, drill a hole for twine, and hang them on your Christmas tree.
- Table centrepiece: Add fairy lights and pinecones for a rustic holiday table setup.
- Gift tags or toppers: Miniature snowmen glued to presents for a handmade touch.
You can keep the look simple and neutral or go bold and colourful depending on your style—and they store easily for use year after year.

- Paint brushes
- Wood glue
- Embellishments – faux greenery, pinecone flower, button, ribbon, snowflake cutout, etc
- 1” eyelet screw and twine

How to Make a Scrap Wood Snowman
Insert the eyelet screw to the top of the snowman as a way to hang the craft when finished. Tie a piece of twine to the eyelet.

Paint the lower half of the large rectangular piece of wood in white or white wash by watering the paint down.
Paint the nose piece in orange.
Using wood glue, attach the brim of the hat on a slight angle.
Next, use the back end of a fine tip paint brush, dab on the snowman eyes and charcoal mouth. And then add a white accent to the eyes.
Glue on the nose.

Add the final touches of ribbon, greenery, pinecone flower and snowflake.
