With rich jewel tones and glamorous gold embellishments this painted wooden bead necklace DIY jewelry idea makes a fabulous gift or handmade craft to sell!
While I didn’t used to be a big “jewelry person” I do love to wear a necklace when I dress up for work and other events that require more than my pijamas!
As soon as I saw it, I fell completely in love with this painted wood bead necklace that Sonja made. Luckily I didn’t have to give too many hints for her to let me have it! The pretty colors of the beads themselves, along with the “splashes” of gold made it so pretty and modern.
Jewelry making is fun in that the possibilities are truly endless. We have a bunch of different jewelry making ideas here on Sustain My Craft Habit. Below are just a few of our favorites from recent projects.
It makes me happy to see these pieces hanging on my rustic glam DIY jewelry organizer – like my own little shop to visit each morning!
You can buy different sizes of wood beads at your local craft store or on Amazon in bulk. These necklaces make great gift ideas or a craft you can make and sell!

- Antique Gold Jewelry Chain
- Jump Rings 6mm, Antique Gold

- Wooden skewers

- Necklace Wire cutters
- Paintbrush, size ½”
- Parchment paper
- Decoart Americana Acrylics in Deep Midnight Blue, Black Plum, Saffron Yellow, and Extreme Sheen in 24K Gold
Tips:
- Use a wooden skewer to hold the beads while they dry.
- Allow paint to dry fully before applying additional coats of paint or changing color.
- To protect your work surface, place a sheet of parchment paper over your work area.
- Prior to painting, ensure the chain fits through the beads.
How to Paint a Wooden Bead Necklace
Paint 3 of the largest wood beads (size 30mm) in Deep Midnight Blue.
Paint 2 of the 25mm sized wood beads in Black Plum.
Paint 2 of the 20mm sized wood beads in Saffron Yellow.
Paint 2 of the smallest sized 15mm wood beads in Extreme Sheen 24k Gold.
On a piece of parchment paper, drizzle some Extreme Sheen in 24K Gold paint as shown.
Working one bead at a time, roll the bead over top of the 24K Gold paint one time.
Thread the wooden skewer through the bead and leave the beads to dry.
Repeat with all the remaining beads.
Using a pair of wire cutters, cut the chain at 30” long.
Thread the chain through the beads with the largest beads in the center to the smallest beads at the ends.
Complete the wooden beaded necklace by attaching magnetic fasteners to the chain ends using necklace links.
And there you go, a glamorous, one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry idea to enjoy. Luckily Sonja gifted me this piece – I get compliments on it each time I wear it!
I do have to say that the wood beads do add a bit of weight to the necklace and sometime the magnetic clasp pops open. You might consider a stronger closure for your handmade necklace, such as a lobster clasp.
