Hi creative friends! Today we’re sharing this wine bag pattern and beginner sewing tutorial because well, who doesn’t appreciate being gifted a bottle of wine, especially at this time of year?

Wine Bottle Bag Pattern (with Free Gnome SVG)

When in doubt, gifting a bottle of wine goes a long way! And if you can, why not add that personal touch by making a handmade wine bottle bag to match. We’ve once again partnered with Canvas Etc. to bring you this free sewing pattern using one of their beautiful, lightweight and natural 100% cotton canvas materials.

The canvas is really versatile, lightweight but still durable. Just to give you an idea of the versatility, we previously used it to make this fun kid’s indoor play tent project as well as these utility aprons.

I would even suggest using it to make this storage ottoman, this drawstring bag and even this canvas table runner. Each post includes the free sewing patterns as well, so be sure to check them out!

We designed this adorable Christmas gnome SVG file and added the little guy as an iron-on vinyl with our Cricut Maker and EasyPress 2. The canvas fabric worked really well with the Premium Iron-On Vinyl and take it from me, it is not compatible with all fabrics!

You can grab the gnome SVG file with the full how-to instructions for adding your own iron-on holiday gnome here.

Wine Bottle Gift Bag Tutorial

Cutting out the Wine Bottle Bag for Sewing

Print out the wine bottle bag pattern on 8.5×11 paper and tape pieces together along the edges to form the pattern.

Setting the wine bag paper pattern on the canvas fabric.

Place the pattern pieces on top of canvas fabric and cut along solid lines. Wine bag consists of two pieces:

  • Rectangle = cutting lines at 16.5”high x 13”wide (includes a 1/4″ seam allowance);
  • Circle = cutting lines at 4.5”diameter (includes a 1/4″ seam allowance)
Cutting the canvas fabric around the paper pattern.

Sewing the Wine Bottle Bag

Join the long sides of the rectangle piece with the right sides together and sew forming a tube shape. Finish the cut edges with a zig zag stitch to avoid fraying.

Sew the circle piece to the bottom end of the long tube shape piece, matching notches. As you can see, I added the iron-on gnome to the cut pieces before sewing but you can also add it afterwards. We’ll be sharing that post and SVG file soon!

Double turn the top cut edge of the wine bottle bag and stitch the hem in place.

Turn right side out and place a wine bottle inside and tie a rope around the top.

And there you have it, the wine bottle bag is complete!
