If you haven’t yet tried painting on bottles, you’ll be amazed at the effects you can achieve. From hand lettering to detailed all over patterns, glass bottles are a great surface to paint on. But we aren’t all naturally talented painters. So today we’re sharing a little cheat for creating beautiful bottle painting ideas using your Cricut cutting machine!

Creative Faux Bottle Painting Ideas with Cricut
Although we loooove to craft, neither of us considers ourselves to be “artists”. Since we don’t have the steady hands nor the fine arts skills, painting on bottles can be somewhat of a challenge. Thankfully, this is where our Cricut Maker 3 has come in handy!
With precision and speed, the Cricut Maker cut out several different images, patterns and intricate lettered phrasing in premium vinyl for us to use on our bottles. We even used one of the images as a removable stencil to help guide our painting on the bottle!
We came up with this home sweet home theme choosing from Cricut’s Design Space library of images. No matter the theme or inspiration, Design Space will likely have just what you’re looking for.
Materials Needed for this Upcycled Bottle Craft:

- Design Space Images #M3D28391 Home Sweet Home Lettering, #M2088A1A2 House, #M3E176 Brick Pattern
- Cricut Maker (or Cricut Maker 3 with Smart Vinyl) with standard Fine Point Blade Tool
- Removable Premium Vinyl in black and red
- Standard Grip Mat
- Scissors
- Weeder
- Transfer Tape
- 3 Clear glass wine bottles, washed and labels removed
- Rust-Oleum Specialty Frosted Glass, semi transparent finish
- Acrylic paint in black and red (we used Decoart Americana in True Red and Lamp (Ebony) Black)
- Fine Tip paint brush
- Twinkle (mini fairy) lights (optional)
3 Faux Bottle Painting Ideas with Cricut:
Preparing the Bottles
For these faux bottle painting ideas, we reused the frosted wine bottles from our wintry centerpiece idea last year. You can, of course, use any shape and size of bottles for these crafts. Just make sure the bottles are cleaned and the labels removed.

Preparing the Design for Cutting
Open a blank canvas to create a new project in Design Space. Upload the images #M3D28391 Home Sweet Home Lettering, #M2088A1A2 House, #M3E176 Brick Pattern and insert them onto the canvas.
Adjust the size of the Home Sweet Home Lettering to 3.5” wide, 4″ wide for the house and 9.5″ wide for the brick pattern. Depending on the bottles your using, you can play around with the measurements.
Place the rectangle over top of the brick pattern and highlight both images together. Click on the slice button. Discard the extra sections around the rectangle.
Change the brick color to red to match the material color.
And lastly, discard the “mortar” area of the pattern.
Select Make It.
Cutting Vinyl with the Cricut Maker
You’re all set to cut out the vinyl for the bottle painting ideas.
Choose Premium Removable Vinyl from the list of material options. If using Smart Vinyl, load the material directly in to the Cricut Maker 3. Otherwise, place the vinyl on top of the grip mat and press continue to cut out the design.
Follow the prompts on the screen and unload when complete. For the home sweet home lettering, use a weeder to remove the excess vinyl.
As for the house, peel away the roof and walls of the house leaving just the windows, door and surrounding vinyl.
And then for the brick pattern, peel away the “mortar” (the area between the rectangular bricks).
Faux Bottle Painting Idea 1. Add Beautiful Lettering and Phrases
Place a piece of transfer sheet overtop of the design and press down firmly, using your nail to help force the vinyl to stick to the transfer sheet.
Tip: If using a new piece of transfer tape, “unstick” the back a bit (press against your clothing) before using to prevent the tape from peeling off the frosted finish on the bottles.
Peel away the backing and place the home sweet home lettering with the transfer sheet on to one of the bottles. Carefully peel away the clear transfer sheet leaving behind only the phrase.
Faux Bottle Painting Idea 2: Apply an All-Over Design/Pattern to the Bottle
Place a piece of transfer sheet overtop of the brick pattern and press down firmly, using your nail to help force the vinyl to stick to the transfer sheet.
Peel away the backing and place the brick pattern with the transfer sheet on to one of the bottles. Carefully peel away the clear transfer sheet leaving behind only the pattern.
Faux Bottle Painting Idea 3: Use the Cricut to Create a Vinyl Stencil
Place a piece of transfer sheet overtop of the house and press down firmly, using your nail to help force the vinyl to stick to the transfer sheet.
Peel away the backing and place the house with the transfer sheet on to one of the bottles. Carefully peel away the clear transfer sheet leaving behind only the house.
Paint the roof of the house in black acrylic paint and paint the walls of the house in red.
Once dry, add another coat of paint and then peel the vinyl leaving just the painting image on to the bottle.
For any areas that the frosting peeled off, use the fine tip paintbrush and carefully apply the frosted paint back on. Since it’s a spray paint, I sprayed a bit into a container and then brushed on the frosted paint with a brush.

Personally, I love how easy it is to transfer such intricate lettering on to the bottle. Even with paper and pen, my own hand lettering doesn’t come close to this!
To finish off our craft, we simply added some pretty twinkle lights to the inside of the jars for styling and placed them on my fireplace mantel. Feels good to be home!
