Transform a simple Dollar Tree canvas into a stunning piece of holiday decor that looks anything but budget-friendly! If you’ve been scrolling through Pinterest admiring those gorgeous textured Christmas canvases but balking at the price tags, you’re in for a treat.
This DIY busted canvas craft uses only DT supplies to create a high-end looking piece that’ll have your holiday guests asking where you bought it.
Why You Will Love This Christmas Busted Canvas Craft
What I love most about this project is how it takes basic materials – a plain canvas, some holiday picks, and a few crafting essentials – and turns them into something that looks like it came straight from a boutique home decor store. The “busted” technique gives the canvas amazing dimension and texture, while the strategic placement of Dollar Tree Christmas elements creates that designer look we’re all after.
Can I Use This For different Holidays?
Absolutely! You can customize this project to match any holiday color scheme or decor style, from farmhouse to glam, all while keeping your budget firmly in check. From New Year through to Christmas this project is perfect for every holiday! In fact, we made one for Thanksgiving which you can check out soon as well.

How to Make a Christmas Busted Canvas Craft
I shared the tutorial for how to make a Christmas busted canvas on a Facebook live which you can watch here or if you prefer the photo tutorial, continue reading below.
Add a coat of Mod Podge on the front of the canvas and lay a large piece of burlap fabric to cover. Gently press down into the glue. You may need to use some hot glue on the edges.
Cut off any excess fabric.
Next, paint the burlap with red paint and let dry.
Turn the canvas over and paint the inside with white paint and let dry.
Add a coat of Mod Podge glue and gently press your paper napkin onto the canvas.
Take your craft knife or scissors and carefully cut slashes into the canvas in the center where you plan to place the image. Make sure not to cut all the way to the edges.
Flip the canvas over and gently fold back the edges of the slashes. Hot glue the ends to the front of the canvas onto the burlap.
Continue until all the edges have been folded over.
Finally, glue the printed Christmas image onto the frame of the canvas.
Additionally, you can add embellishments or greenery to the top of the busted canvas.
Gorgeous Holiday Decor
And there you have it – a gorgeous piece of holiday decor that looks like it cost a fortune but was created with just a few Dollar Tree finds! This busted canvas technique truly shows that you don’t need to break the bank to create beautiful Christmas decorations for your home. The textured background combined with carefully placed holiday elements creates depth and visual interest that rivals any high-end decor piece.
