DIY Dollar Tree Christmas Decoration

A gold charger plate is one of those supplies that always feels a bit too pretty to hide under a dinner plate, which is why turning it into a simple Christmas craft makes so much sense!

Finished Dollar Tree Christmas decoration made from a charger plate, napkin and embellishments.

I gifted this finished piece to my mom for Christmas because it reminded me of the church in the village where she grew up in Croatia. Not only was the project budget friendly AND beginner-friendly, it also felt very nostalgic! Do you see the resemblance?

Tips, Variations & Troubleshooting

Variations

You can switch the look entirely by choosing matte gold, brushed metal paint, or even a glitter finish if you prefer a brighter Christmas charger plate craft. Stencils and vinyl decals work well on the smooth surface, giving you options like snowflakes, monograms, or simple festive wording. If you enjoy mixed-media projects, add a ribbon trim or small embellishments around the edge for a more decorative style.

Size & Colour Options

Charger plates come in several sizes, so pick one that fits the space you want to decorate. Standard 13-inch plates are great for wall or shelf displays, while smaller versions suit table centrepieces. If gold isn’t your theme this year, you can spray-paint the base in silver, champagne, rose gold, or deep green to create a personalised Christmas plate craft that matches your décor.

Troubleshooting

If the paint looks streaky, a second thin coat usually evens it out. When vinyl won’t stick, give the plate a quick wipe with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue. Should your design peel after a few days, sealing it with a clear acrylic topcoat helps it last through the entire festive season.

How to Display / Style Your Project

This gold charger plate Christmas craft works well in so many spots around the home. It makes a lovely home décor idea when propped on a mantel with a few fairy lights or placed on a shelf alongside candles and greenery.

You can also use it as part of a table centrepiece by pairing it with a glass hurricane and seasonal foliage for a warm, elegant look. If you prefer turning it into a gift décor idea, place it in a simple stand, wrap it in cellophane, and add a festive bow—an easy handmade present that feels thoughtful without being complicated.
