Halloween is just around the corner and we couldn’t help but make a few fun Halloween crafts. This stacked books decor idea was on our crafting list for some time so we’re excited to share the how-to. We’ll show you how to use simple wooden blocks to make an adorable yet creepy stacked books decor idea for Halloween.

DIY Wooden Block Decorative Stacked Books

Although we were thinking to make this stacked books craft for all year round farmhouse decor, Halloween gave us the motivation to actually make this fun project. On a recent Facebook Live, Jane showed us how to easily make this decor idea using wooden blocks, some paint and a hot glue gun. Most every night, she shares a new craft idea to add to her three tiered tray either for Fall or more recently for Halloween.

We used leftover wood pieces from making this DIY porch planter box, but you can also use and upcycle old books from the thrift store. Just make sure to choose books about the same size and shape so that they stack together nicely. And if you’re interested in more upcycled book crafts, check out these birch bark painted decoration for your bookshelf.

How to Make a Stacked Books Decoration for Halloween:

We first shared the tutorial for making this stacked books decor on a recent Facebook Live video which you can find here or if you rather, continue reading below for the step-by-step instructions.

Start by using the hot glue gun, spell the words ‘Spells, Potions and Brews on the spines of the books (wood blocks) and let them dry.  This will create a 3D effect on the spines.

Next, paint each of the wood blocks in a different color (one black, one white and one grey). The grey comes from mixing a bit of black with the white paint. Paint over the glued lettering as well.

Wipe away the excess paint with a cloth and let them dry. Give them more of a distressed look by sanding the edges and/or dry brushing over top in a contrasting color.

Once dry, stack the books one on top of the other in the order of your choosing and apply glue between each layer to old them all together.

Using the metallic gold paint, brush over the glued words on the spines and let dry.

Last but not least, use a piece of twine to tie the stacked books together.

For extra fun and spookiness, you can add any sort of Halloween decoration to the books. We hot glued a spider for more effect. What do you think about the finished piece? Pretty spook-a-rific don’t you think?
