Making Valentine’s Day Decor with Scrap Wood

Do you love to decorate for Valentines but don’t necessarily have the budget for it? This pretty painting project using scrap wood blocks is a great way to make a big impact with little cost.

LOVE-ly Scrap Wood Block Valentine’s Decor

I don’t like to think of myself as a hoarder but whenever I see those wood ends of lumber get thrown away from DIY projects I cringe a little. I felt vindicated for holding onto these wood blocks from our recent wooden DIY planter box when I saw how pretty this project turned out.

You can actually buy similar wood blocks at a local craft store or consider heading to a lumber or home-improvement shop and asking for their leftover ends. We used leftover 2×6 lumber but you could also use the ends of two by fours with smaller wood letters.

Also to save cost so you could use any pink and red acrylic paints that you have at home. We used Decoart’s Extreme Sheen which gave the pieces a really nice hard, semi-shiny finish. In a weird way they actually remind me of candy!

Materials Needed to Make this Wood Block LOVE Sign:

• 4 wooden blocks: 2×6 cut to 10”, 9”, 8” and 6” high
• wood letters in different sizes/styles to spell LOVE
• DecoArt Americana Old French Script Stencil
• Decoart Heart Stencil; 5″x7″
• Decoart Extreme Sheen paint in Champagne Gold, Pink Tourmaline, Rose Quartz, Ruby and Sterling Silver
• Paint brushes
• Hot glue gun and clear craft glue
• Small white ribbon

A Few Tips Before Starting:

• Ensure that the wood blocks are sanded smooth prior to painting.
• Let paint dry fully between layers for optimal coverage.
• Protect your working surface with newspaper or other disposable material.
• Wash your paint brushes between colors and coats to keep the paints colors from mixing together.

How to Make a Scrap Wood LOVE Sign:

Paint each of the wood letters with Champagne Gold. You may need 1-2 layers to get full coverage.

Paint the front and sides of the tallest block (10”) with Ruby. Let dry then paint a second coat as needed.

Paint the smallest block (6”) with Rose Quartz, second smallest (8”) with Sterling Silver, and second largest (9”) with Pink Tourmaline. Let dry completely.

Apply the Old French Script stencil to the Sterling Silver painted wood block using Pink Tourmaline. Let dry.

Apply the Hearts stencil to the Ruby painted wood block using Sterling Silver. Let dry.

Glue the letters onto the wood blocks to spell LOVE.

Add a small white ribbon above the O.

I LOVE how this inexpensive Valentine’s decor turned out! It did take a bit longer than I had anticipated to paint all the blocks, especially since they needed a couple of coats of paint each.

But the Extreme Sheen paint gives the pieces a really nice lustre – almost a candy coating!
