Colorful Painted Rock Monsters

As far as Halloween decorating goes, we have a preference for the pretty and elegant approach over the gruesome and scary kind. And if you’re wondering how Halloween decor can be elegant, then here are just a few examples of what we mean:

However, a little silliness at Halloween is a MUST so these painted rock monsters are the perfect craft. You can choose any combination of bright and non traditional colored paints and the silly monsters would look great all year long. Supplies needed to make these Halloween painted rocks:

• 3 rocks with a smooth surface (one rock fits in the palm of your hand)
• Acrylic paint brushes, assorted sizes and tips
• Decoart Americana Multi-Surface Satin paint
  • Apple Green
  • Pumpkin Patch (or this Orange Sherbet)
  • Eggplant
  • Cotton Ball
  • Lipstick (or this Red Barn)
  • Black Tie

A few tips for painting rocks before you get started:

• Before you start, protect your work surface with a sheet of newspaper or parchment paper and wash and dry the rocks before painting. 
• Allow paint to fully dry between steps and when changing to a new color

Instructions for the ORANGE monster painted rocks

Paint the surface of the rock in Pumpkin Patch and let it dry. Repeat with as many coats as needed to achieve desired coverage.

Mix equal parts of Pumpkin Patch and Cotton Ball. Using a fine tip paintbrush, paint two irregular circular shapes for the eyes.  Paint a small rounded square shape for the nose.

Paint an irregular triangular shape for the mouth in Lipstick.

Using a fine tip paint brush, paint another set of smaller irregular circular shaped eyes over the light orange shapes in Cotton Ball and paint two different sized teeth in Cotton Ball.

Using the back end of a large paintbrush, dab two different sized pupils inside the eyeballs in Black Tie.

Using a fine tip paintbrush, follow the shape of the bottom of each eyeball in Lipstick.

Add a long rounded rectangle over the eye in the light orange mixture.

And lastly, add thin intersecting lines in Lipstick to resemble stitches.

Instructions for the PURPLE monster painted rocks:

Paint the rock surface in Eggplant and let it dry.

Mix equal parts of Eggplant and Cotton Ball. Using a fine tip paintbrush, paint one large circular shape for the eye.  Paint a small rounded square shape for the nose. 

Paint a thin horizontal line for the mouth in Lipstick.

Using a fine tip paint brush, paint a large circle shaped eye over the light purple shape in Cotton Ball and paint one long over-sized tooth in Cotton Ball.

Using the back end of a large paintbrush, dab one large sized pupil inside the eyeball in Black Tie. 

Add a long rounded rectangle over the eye in the light purple mixture and then add thin intersecting lines in Lipstick to resemble stitches. Lastly, follow the shape of the eyeball and paint a thin line in Lipstick.

Instructions for the GREEN monster painted rocks:

Paint the rock surface in Apple Green and let it dry.

Mix equal parts of Apple Green and Cotton Ball. Using a fine tip paintbrush, paint two irregular circular shapes for the eyes.  Paint a small rounded square shape for the nose. 

Paint a large upside triangular shape for the mouth in Lipstick.

Using a fine tip paint brush, paint two irregular shaped eyes over the light green shapes in Cotton Ball and paint three rounded square teeth in Cotton Ball.

Using the back end of a large paintbrush, dab medium sized pupils inside the eyeball in Black Tie. 

Using a fine tip paintbrush, follow the shape of the bottom of each eyeball in Lipstick.

Add a long rounded boomerang shape over the eye in the light green mixture and then add thin intersecting lines in Lipstick to resemble stitches.
