We’re looking to nature for this simple Christmas craft idea turning cut twigs into pretty decorative house decorations. These free standing twig houses embellished with fresh greens, pinecones and a festve bow make for a sweet and unique Christmas centerpiece.
Christmas Crafting DIY Twig House Decorations
We’ve made our share of creative crafts using the branches of my mulberry tree over the years. Things like this mulberry vine Spring wreath, pretty pumpkin wreath form and this adorable mini witches broom craft were all made from tree cuttings. And of course if you don’t have a mulberry tree, twigs from other trees work just fine to make these 3D house decorations. To give you an idea, we used branches cut from a pear tree to also make this XO wall sign.
We were inspired to make this craft as part of a series of Facebook Live videos all about holiday decorating. You can check out the video for these rustic twig house decorations here. It was such a blast to put together with everyone’s input on which embellishments to add! And how that perfect little felt cardinal perched on the roof came to be still brings me a smile.

- Hot Glue Gun
- Wood Twigs (cut to 3″ long)
- White Chalky Paint (optional for painting the hosue white)
- Paint Brush
- Greenery
- Embellishments (such as charms, bells, red berries and pinecones)
How to Make Rustic Twig House Decorations for Christmas
Trim the twigs to 3 inches.
Using the glue gun, glue four of the twigs together to create a square base and let the glue set and then repeat this step.
Next, place the square base on its side and glue four twigs on the corners of the base and glue the other square to the twigs to create a ‘twig cube’.
Then, take two twigs and glue them together to create a ‘roof peak’ and repeat this on the other end of the cube.
Take some fresh greenery and glue it to the twig house. I had to play around with the placement of the greenery until I found the perfect spot for it.
Add the rest of the embellishments to the Christmas twig houses, things like pinecones, red berries and a colorful ribbon are really sweet touches!
You can also add some other fun pieces like a bell, wooden trinkets and a felt bird to the twig house for greater effect.
As another option, paint the twig house using a white chalky paint.
Some Crafting Tips
You can play around with the size of the twigs, reducing the lengths to 2″ or 2.5″ for a smaller twig house. In fact, we think the smaller houses would make adorable twig ornaments for the tree! Also, to make the twigs more secure, we’d suggest adding a dab of wood glue to each of the join points just before connecting the pieces with hot glue.
