Easy Scrap Fabric Ghost Decor

Those leftover white fabric pieces from old sewing projects have a way of piling up, don’t they? Instead of letting them sit forgotten in a drawer, turn them into something hauntingly cute—DIY scrap fabric ghosts.

Why You’ll Love This Project

This simple, no-sew project is a fun way to make Halloween decor that feels homemade, a little whimsical, and perfectly imperfect. Each ghost turns out slightly different depending on the fabric you use—cotton, lace, muslin, or even old t-shirts all work beautifully.

You can make them in under 15 minutes, and the best part is how charming they look grouped together, hanging from branches, or sitting on a windowsill.

Creative Ways to Display Your Fabric Ghosts

Once you’ve made a small ghost army, the fun part begins—deciding where to show them off. Here are some ideas:

  • Tie a few with twine and hang them from a tree branch for a floating ghost garland.
  • Place larger ones on bookshelves or in planters to add a bit of Halloween charm to your everyday decor.
  • A cluster of small ghosts can look adorable around candles (just keep them at a safe distance), or you can use fishing line to make them appear like they’re drifting midair in a doorway.
  • For outdoor setups, tie them to sticks and line your garden path—it’s a subtle, handmade way to greet trick-or-treaters.

How to Make an Easy Scrap Fabric Ghost Decor

  1. Paint the surface of the wood block with white paint. Let dry completely.
  2. Paint a generous coat of school glue onto the wood block and let dry tacky.
  3. Brush black paint over the glue. As the paint dries, a crackle finish will form like magic!
  4. Paint and glue wooden pegs to the bottom of the wood block.
  5. Next, drill or glue a wooden dowel into the center of the base. This will hold your ghost upright.
  6. Attach a Styrofoam ball to the top of the dowel using hot glue. This will be the ghost’s head and give shape to the fabric.
  7. Take your scrap fabric and drape it over the ball. Adjust so it covers the dowel. If the fabric isn’t long enough you can add some black fabric or lace to cover the bottom of the dowel.
  8. Tie a piece of string or white cord just below the “head” to create a neck. Let extra strands hang down.
  9. Using black paint, or a marker, add two eyes to the fabric.
  10. Finally, add embellishments like flowers or a bow to the ghost.
