Guys! We are so excited that the time has finally come to share the entire completed Orchardview bedroom of our Graystone beach cottage renovation. Over the last couple of months we’ve been giving this bedroom a complete beachy makeover and have shared a number DIY coastal decor ideas along the way.
You can find tutorials for most of the 14 DIY coastal decor ideas in the bedroom by clicking on the images here:
With relatively little cost this room has come along way (you can see the before photos here) and is now a serene, bright and crisp oasis of relaxation. We both wish this room was in our homes rather than 200 km away at the cottage. But at least we’ll get to enjoy our holidays at the beach even more!
We’ve created a little video tour of the new Orchardview Coastal Bedroom for you. Please leave us a comment on the video letting us know which is your favourite DIY in the room.
If we had to choose, our favourite elements of this room would be the upcycled tall dresser as well as the driftwood wall art. We use the same color (Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Serene) in the art piece that we used on the dresser to tie the room together a bit.
You’ll also find that blue paint on the little frame for the feather watercolor print which we have available for you as a free download (for personal use only), as a thank you for hanging in there with us through this remodel.
With the closet right there, we didn’t have room for another nightstand. Instead, we hung a charming magazine holder we found at the thrift store. Its rustic look adds a unique touch to the room. That nautical rope ball door weight that we received from Uncommon Goods is also a fun little touch in this corner, giving it a coastal vibe. We had to add a bunch of throw pillows to the bed! These included a mix of different textures and a little pop of color, from soft pastels to vibrant patterns, making the bed more comfortable and visually appealing. These included:
- rectangular pillows found on clearance and upcycled with some ribbon and a driftwood button from our Etsy shop;
- our Crashing Waves at Sunset 18″ throw pillow;
- a DIY felt nautical throw pillow.
Classic Beach House Master Bedroom Styles
When it comes to classic beach houses and their master bedroom styles, there are a few key elements that consistently stand out. First and foremost, a soothing color palette dominated by whites, soft blues, and sandy neutrals sets the tone for a serene space. Natural materials such as rattan, wicker furniture, and driftwood add texture and a touch of coastal rustic charm alongside the focal point. Linen and cotton fabrics are favored for their breathability and casual elegance, perfect for a beachside retreat.
Nautical elements, including rope accents, seashell motifs, and maritime artwork, bring the essence of the coast indoors. Large, airy windows that let in plenty of natural light further enhance the open and relaxed atmosphere, making the master bedroom a true sanctuary by the sea.
Adding Pops of Bright Color
While neutral shades like whites, soft blues, and sandy beiges dominate the classic beach house aesthetic, integrating pops of bright color can enhance themed bedrooms design and add a vibrant touch. Consider introducing accents in coral, turquoise, or sunny yellow to energize the space without overwhelming the serene ambiance. This can be achieved through decorative pillows, wicker baskets with colored material inside, sisal rugs, vibrant wall art, or small accessories like vases and lamps. Use crisp white walls and white curtains to allow the color to shine, particularly if you use blue accents.
Balancing these bold hues with the existing neutral palette ensures that the room retains its calm, coastal charm while offering an engaging visual contrast that makes the decor come alive. This works well if you have either dark or light hardwood floors or even a distressed wood look in the room.
Coastal Bedroom Furniture
When selecting furniture for a coastal home, focus on both functional and evocative pieces of the seaside. Opt for light-colored wood with wicker accents or whitewashed furniture, which exudes a relaxed, beachy vibe. Pieces with clean lines and minimalistic designs work best to maintain the airy, uncluttered feel typical of coastal decor.
Wicker or rattan furniture is a great way to add a touch of rustic charm. Additionally, incorporating multi-functional furniture, such as a storage bench at the foot of the bed or a dresser with ample storage, can help keep the space organized and free of clutter, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere of your coastal retreat.
