Adorable DIY Decorative Wood Block Apples

We’re putting some leftover scrap wood to use to make adorable DIY decorative wood block apples. They’re just in time for fall decorating. Or give one as a gift to the teacher for back-to-school!

Easy to Make Rustic Decorative Block Apples

After discovering some leftover 4×4 wood posts in my garage I thought I hit the jackpot. Although at the time I didn’t know what I was going to make, it’s always exciting to find craft materials just lying around!

You could say we’ve made a “few” things in the past out of scrap wood, such as this silly bathroom sign, large farmhouse sign, Valentine’s wood block decor, towel rack, glittering birch wood slice ornaments and all of our DIY driftwood creations! We also have a whole list of scrap wood projects to make and sell!

Soon inspiration struck and I used the wood blocks to make a set of apples to use as decor in my house. Actually, they’d make a really cute teacher gift idea, don’t you think?

Materials Needed:

• Set of 3 wood blocks, 4×4 wood post cut 3.75” high
• Sandpaper
• Americana Acrylics in Primary Red, Foliage Green, Marigold, Buttermilk, Dark Chocolate, White Wash
• Paintbrushes in assorted sizes
• 3 Wooden spools
• Paper Towel
• Wood glue, clear drying
• Felt sheet, green
• Fabric scissors
• Pencil

How to Make DIY Wood Block Apples

Carefully cut a 4×4 post into 3 blocks, each measuring 3.75” high. Sand all rough edges until smooth and wipe away the saw dust.

Paint the surface of each wood block a different color: Primary Red, Foliage Green, Marigold and let the paint dry fully before proceeding.

Paint the wooden spool in Dark Chocolate and wipe away the excess paint with a paper towel leaving it looking more like a wood stain than solid paint.

Using a pencil draw the outline of a half apple on one side of each wood block.

Paint inside the lines in a Buttermilk color. Repeat if extra coverage is needed.

Lighten the buttermilk with 1 part white and paint the inside of the apple leaving just the center in solid Buttermilk.

With a fine point paintbrush, paint two apple seeds in the center.

When dry, sand down the edges to give each block a weathered look.

Apply a dab of glue to the center of the woodblock and press the spool into the glue.

Cut out three felt leaves using the printable leaf template.

Fold the rounded end of the leaf in half and glue it to the top of the wood block.

And there you have it, the set of wood block apples is complete! I wonder what else I can make with the rest of the scrap wood?
