How to Craft a Lovely Cardboard Heart Sign

Hi creative friends! Today we’re upcycling some corrugated cardboard to make a lovely heart sign for Valentine’s Day. Who knew cardboard could look so pretty?!

DIY Cardboard Craft for Valentines

I’m not sure at which point we started saving all of the cardboard boxes and packaging material from items we purchase online. It sort of just happened organically I guess, LOL, as a way to reduce and reuse when it came to shipping our own items that we sell in our Sustain My Craft Habit Etsy shop. So with all this saved cardboard lying around, why not create cardboard crafts too?

How to Craft a Lovely Cardboard Heart Sign

We first shared the tutorial for making this cardboard heart sign on a recent Facebook Live which you can catch here or continue reading for the step by step photo tutorial below.

First, paint your wood plaque white and repeat if needed for more coverage. Let the paint dry fully.

Painting a wood plaque white.

While drying, start cutting out your heart template using just some scrap paper. Then use that template to cut out the cardboard heart. Once cut, paint the currogated cardboard heart in gold metallic paint.

Paint the outside frame of the plaque in pink and give it a couple coats until your happy with the coverage.

Using masking tape, block off the background creating a striped pattern and then paint the white sections in black.

After the black paint is dry, add some mod podge or craft glue over the black sections and pour some diamond dust over top. Remove the excess and let the glue dry fully.

Now it’s time to decorate it! Glue your cardboard heart to the center adding the “love” lettering on top.

Add any other decor you might have such as a faux florals, bows, etc. I used a pink gingham bow and a gold feather to my pretty Valentine’s Day sign.
