If you have dogwood trees or shrubs growing in your backyard, you’re in for a treat with this crafty idea. Today, we’re showing you how to create beautiful, natural heart-shaped wreaths for Valentine’s Day using dogwood branches and a few other simple embellishments such as paper and crochet flower and bows.
DIY Dogwood Wreath
Ever since we made this mulberry vine wreath for Spring many years ago, we’ve been inspired to create different wreath using natural materials like our pumpkin wreath, evergreen wreath and boxwood wreath. It’s especially fun to make the wreath forms using vines and long flexible tree branches like we did with this pumpkin wreath form and snowman door decor.
Dogwood is a densely woody plant that is most noticeable during the winter period because of their brightly coloured stems. If you see those deep red branches, you’ll know it’s dogwood. We also used the branches of another flowering shrub from our mom’s backyard that has the same characteristics of dogwood although I’m not sure of the name.

How to Make Heart Shaped Dogwood Wreaths
We first shared the tutorial for making these sheart shaped dogwood wreaths on a recent Facebook Live which you can catch here.
To start, begin shaping and bending the dogwood branches to make them more flexible and easier to work with.
Separate the branches into two parts, each grouping to have 3 dogwood branches. Bend the branches to form an egg shape and wrap some crafting wire to the overlapping ends in order to secure them.
Wrap more crafting wire around the loose branches to help hold the shape. Keep the wrapping loose to make a fuller heart shape. Repeat this process for the second set of dogwood branches.
In order to connect the two sections of dogwood branches, place them together in the middle and wrap some crafting wire to secure the sections to create a heart shape.
Last but not least, create a bow with some pretty ribbon and using the hot glue gun, glue the ribbon to the wreah form.
And lastly, using the hot glue gun, glue some pretty pink paper flowers (or crochet flowers) to the wreath as well.
You can also add some faux greenery to the wreath like we did, it really pops against the red dogwood branches!
