Preparing Acorns for Crafting

Before you start crafting with foraged acorns, be sure to prep them by placing them into an oven and baking them for 1-1.5 hours at a low temperature (220C). This will dry them fully, kill off any little bugs and prevent them from rotting over time.

How to Make a Valentine’s Day Acorn Garland

Here is a step-by-step video of the acorn garland we made on our Facebook page! Or if you prefer the photo tutorial, continue reading below.

Take to tops off of the acorns (you will not need the tops for this craft).

Drill a hole through the centers of the acorns from top to the bottom.

Paint the acorns red, pink and white. Let them dry. Place them on a sheet of wax paper to prevent them from sticking while they dry.

Prepare the birch slice

Drill a small hole into the side edge of the birch slice just large enough to make it easier to screw in an eyelet hook.

Paint the surface of the birch slice white and let the paint dry.

Next, paint a heart in red glitter in the center of the wood slice and let that paint dry. Afterwards, paint an “XO” on the back side of the wood slice and let it dry.

Add your eyelet hook to the predrilled hole and thread some invisible fishing line through the hook and continue threading the predrilled acorns as if they were beads. Alternate the colors of the acorns to get the same look as our garland.

Lastly, make a tassel with baker’s twine by wrapping it around your fingers 25-30 times. Cut one end of the wapped twine and then tie another piece of twin around the top.
